Hello there!

Today let’s talk about how to delete objects that has dependencies associated to them.

By default, when you try to delete a report that is used in a document, for example, you will see a mesage like this:

You can change this behavior to allow deletion of dependencies.

Dynamic File Name with Attributes in Distribution Service

Hello there!

Today let’s talk about how to rename a Distribution Service generated file using a Dynamic name.

If you have already configured a Burst Distribution Service subscription, you can name each file using the elements from attributes in Page-By of your report.

To do that you just have to:

1. Create a new report with at least 1 attribute in the page-by section;

2. Open MicroStrategy Web and create a new File Subscription;

3. Chose a Location and click on Burst… button. After that, select all attributes that you want to Burst;

4. In “File Name” write:

{[Year]@[Desc]} – {[Category]@[Desc]}

5. Click Ok and open the location defined. You will see all Bursted files with the specific names as the example shows below:

That’s it. You just have to use the name of the attribute plus the attribute form like this: {[Name of the attribute]@[Attribute Form]} and you will create dynamic file names for your subscription.

Specific login for a project

Hello there!

Today let’s talk about MicroStrategy Web Authetication modes. Do you know that is possible to assign different authetication per project?

You could set Windows Authentication only in Project A and Standard Authentication in Project B.

To accomplish that, you just have to:

1. Login as Administrator in MicroStrategy Web;

2. Open Project A;

3. Go to Preferences;

4. Select Project Defaults;

5. Security and assign a different authentication mode for that specific project.

Where is my template window?

Hello there!

Today let’s talk about the template window that appears when you create a selected object in Desktop/Developer. When you check the “Don’t show this dialog in the future“, you won’t see that window again to choose between templates or objects.

The greatest problem is when you check this option in Reports. You won’t be able to create new FreeForm SQL reports.

So, how can we make MicroStrategy open that window again?

To do that you just have to:

1. Open Desktop/Developer;

2. Click on Tools -> Preferences… -> Object Template

Now, just check all template windows that you want to appear when creating a new specific object.

Using System Process

Hello there!

Today let’s talk about a quick and good tip when you are facing some problems with I/O in your environment.

I once had a problem sending a pdf document using images in NarrowCast Server. The PDF was sent, but I couldn’t see the image inside the PDF file.

To understand what was happening with my NarrowCast Server, I installed Process Explorer  to watch my Windows and see what was going on.

It is a simple program to display all I/O and network access in Windows SO. In my case, I could see that MicroStrategy was searching the image in a wrong path, I just had to set the right path and I could see the image correctly.

When you face problems in your Windows like this, install Process Explorer to watch all the processes and see what is going on.

Hope it helps!

God bless you!
